Lauren earman6/3/2023 Madeline Willner led the South County girls with a top 10 run from the returning All-State cross country runner. Two other Virginia schools finished high in the championship division in South County (5th, 142 pts) and Lee-Davis (6th, 146 pts). Less than a minute separated Cutright from the team's fourth finisher Lindsay Skolrood (22nd, 20:01), but the absence of LeHardy was felt after Skolrood with Hidden Valley's inferior depth in comparison to Brentsville who put seven runners ahead of Hidden Valley's fifth finisher. Haley Cutright, a state runner-up one year ago as a freshmen in cross country, had an encouraging performance for her team with her best race of the season in placing third with a time of 19:06. Hidden Valley had defeated Brentsville while at full strength at Maymont last weekend, but had to settle for third place this weekend with 74 points. Hidden Valley, one of Brentsville's top rivals in Group AA along with the defending state champion Blacksburg girls was present in Greensboro, but racing without their #1 runner Annie Le Hardy. She had four other teammates finishing among the top 20 individuals and under 20 minutes in Maggie Gentry (11th, 19:32), Morgan Price (13th, 19:35), Sarah Earman (14th, 19:41), and Lauren Bussian (20th, 19:58). The squad was led by race champion Allison Bartels (pictured left by Ted Plunkett), who scored her first major invitational victory with a personal best time of 18:47. Forbidden game song6/3/2023 ![]() So now I find myself hoping that he’s on board for the next game in the series.īut it’s not just composers that we need to talk about. In fact, he’s responsible for some of my favorite pieces on the album, and his work fits in perfectly with the returning team. But after hearing his work in the full soundtrack, I realized I was wrong to worry. Lozowchuk is responsible for a little over a third of the soundtrack, and I must admit, I wasn’t initially sure about his involvement. ![]() Joining these three (well, really four - The Flight is a duo) is Oleksa Lozowchuk, whom you might know from the Dead Rising series. ![]() Joris de Man, Niels van der Leest, and The Flight all return to compose for Horizon Forbidden West, and their involvement means that the game’s music sounds like a natural continuation of the music in Zero Dawn. Let’s start by talking about that venerable sound team. It’s better in almost every way, much like the game itself. The music in Horizon Forbidden West is not just “as great” as Zero Dawn. I knew the aural experience would be as great as the first game. Hearing that Horizon Forbidden West would include the same sound team, with an additional member even, was a considerable hype factor. The game didn’t just look great, run well, have a good story, and star a fantastic leading lady it also had a gorgeous, atmospheric soundtrack that immediately stood out from practically the first cutscene to the ending credits. Music was an essential part of what made Horizon Zero Dawn so special to me. ![]() Hopefully, Aloy's newfound outlook will provide her with the determination she needs to defeat the threat that looms before her, but for now, the strength of the bonds she's forged has given her the willpower to, as Rost advised, " look deeper, and then fight like you can win.24 – This Place, This Moment Aloy begins her journey in a dark place, but by the end of the game, she feels hopeful about the future. In later verses of the song's ending version, Aloy recognizes her value through the lyrics " I had courage like the beast" and " the little child inside is jealous of your strength," which represents a more positive perspective than Aloy previously possessed.Īs beautifully illustrated by the alterations made to the lyrics, Aloy's character changes significantly in Horizon Forbidden West. Although she may feel empty and lonely at times, she has friends who will help her if she needs them. Alone, Aloy is not enough to save the world, but she is no longer on her own. In the chorus of "In The Flood"'s ending version, Aloy once again states that she is " raindrops in the flood," but no longer views this in a negative light. As evidenced by her stubborn independence throughout Horizon Forbidden West's problematically extended opening, Aloy feels obligated to reject any assistance she's offered. Because she's a clone of Elisabet Sobeck and was made to restore GAIA, Aloy feels that saving the Earth is a challenge she must face on her own. The song offers players insight into Aloy's current mental state, and her mindset regarding the challenges ahead of her. The lyrics reveal her feelings of loneliness and isolation, with lines like " their kindness calls to me/I have to block it out" and " my heart in silence burns/through solemnness and bone" detailing her inner turmoil. "In The Flood" plays during Horizon Forbidden West's opening credits, as Aloy journeys to the Forbidden West alone. Although her companions want to help, Aloy rejects their assistance because she thinks that, because they have no obligation to save the world, she shouldn't allow them to shoulder her burden. Because she's a clone of Elisabet Sobeck and was made to restore GAIA, Aloy feels that saving the Earth is a challenge she must face on her own. Java flowlayout example6/2/2023 ![]() ![]() The following table lists constructors of the FlowLayout class. The code snippet below creates a FlowLayout object and the components it manages.ĬtComponentOrientation( Another constructor of the FlowLayout class specifies how much vertical or horizontal padding is put around the components. To specify that the row is to aligned either to the left or right, use a FlowLayout constructor that takes an alignment argument. If the container is wider than necessary for a row of components, the row is, by default, centered horizontally within the container. If the horizontal space in the container is too small to put all the components in one row, the FlowLayout class uses multiple rows. It also did not matter if a child had attended a public or private school. ![]() ![]() These findings held true regardless of differences in standards of teaching and whether children were taught for one year or two by a matched ethnicity teacher. However, it did not influence cognitive flexibility. When students had an ethno-racial match with their teacher, their reading and math scores were higher. The study's sample was more than 18,000 pupils across the US, which showed Black and Latin American children fared the best when their teach looked like themĪll groups were compared with a control group taught by a teacher from a different ethno-racial background. The study also looked at the effect of teachers and students matched by ethnicity on children's reading and math scores. Working memory was assessed by the researchers asking children to repeat a dictated series of numbers, with one extra digit added to the series every time the child remembered the previous series correctly. The latter was measured by how well children could switch between thinking about different concepts and was done sorting cards by shape, color and border. The other was so-called cognitive flexibility, which is the ability to change your attention and perspectives. One was working memory, which is the ability to hold and process information in our minds. Filter haskell6/2/2023 ![]() And this function, finally, just takes an a and returns an a. Similarly, this function takes an a and returns a function of type (Num a) => a -> a. So our function takes an a and returns a function of type (Num a) => a -> (a -> a). The thing before the -> is the parameter that a function takes and the thing after it is what it returns. Remember that this function's type could also be written as multThree :: (Num a) => a -> (a -> (a -> a)). 9 is applied to that function and the result is 135 or something. So then 5 is applied to that, which creates a function that will take a parameter and multiply it by 15. That creates a function that takes one parameter and returns a function. What really happens when we do multThree 3 5 9 or ((multThree 3) 5) 9? First, 3 is applied to multThree, because they're separated by a space. Take a look at this offensively simple function: Using partial application (calling functions with too few parameters, if you will) is a neat way to create functions on the fly so we can pass them to another function or to seed them with some data. So how is that beneficial to us? Simply speaking, if we call a function with too few parameters, we get back a partially applied function, meaning a function that takes as many parameters as we left out. That's why the return type and the parameters of functions are all simply separated with arrows. That could be read as: max takes an a and returns (that's the ->) a function that takes an a and returns an a. That can also be written as max :: (Ord a) => a -> (a -> a). The space is sort of like an operator and it has the highest precedence. Putting a space between two things is simply function application. That sounds like a mouthful but it's actually a really cool concept. ![]() Then, 5 is applied to that function and that function produces our desired result. Doing max 4 5 first creates a function that takes a parameter and returns either 4 or that parameter, depending on which is bigger. ![]() It looks like it takes two parameters and returns the one that's bigger. Let's take our good friend, the max function. What does that mean? You'll understand it best on an example. So how is it possible that we defined and used several functions that take more than one parameter so far? Well, it's a clever trick! All the functions that accepted several parameters so far have been curried functions. Curried functionsĮvery function in Haskell officially only takes one parameter. They're a really powerful way of solving problems and thinking about programs. It turns out that if you want to define computations by defining what stuff is instead of defining steps that change some state and maybe looping them, higher order functions are indispensable. Higher order functions aren't just a part of the Haskell experience, they pretty much are the Haskell experience. A function that does either of those is called a higher order function. Haskell functions can take functions as parameters and return functions as return values. |
